The Opus by Omniyat, which Zaha Hadid first conceptualized in 2007, was finished posthumously by her firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) earlier this year, giving a welcome volumetric detour to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa district’s rigorous linearity. The 20-story glass structure, which is only 305 feet tall, has 96 homes in addition to offices, restaurants, and bars, as well as the ME Hotel. The construction is made up of two towers that are united by a four-story atrium at the base and a three-story bridge that spans the top levels of one side, and it has a cube-like shape that melts at its center. And while The Opus outer walls mirror the surrounding landscape during the day, at night its amorphous interior emits a dynamic glow that gives the structure its shape.
In response to a brief from ZHA and the client that demanded a seamless integration of the lighting system into the building, dpa lighting consultants devised a novel plan to illuminate the surfaces of the void’s 65,000-square-foot inward-facing facade rather than those of the elevations surrounding it. “A major priority was to ensure that the lighting equipment did not detract from or impair the smooth, flowing form of the internal void,” says dpa designer Michael Curry. To achieve this, dpa worked with the lighting firm Vexica, the building design team, and 5,000 individually programmable 1.5-watt RGBW LED light spots. These are housed in razor-thin luminaires that are flush-mounted into the building’s skin in between its insulated glazing modules. The technology, controlled by a DMX control, has the ability to “paint” sceneries of white or colorful light across the vast glass “canvas” of the void.
